Operating Company Builds a Single Consolidated View of Investments Across 16 Entities

Industry: Investment Holding Activities of an Operating Company
Solution:  Consolidated View of Asset Portfolios for Management Analysis
Results: Single, consolidated investment view with fair value and NAV visibility to support stronger decision-making

Table of Contents

The Challenge

An operating company maintained a diversified investment portfolio across a broad range of asset classes, including equities, properties, bonds, and investment funds. Over time, its investment activities expanded across 16 different entities, creating a fragmented structure that made it difficult for management to maintain a clear, consolidated view of overall exposure and performance.

While the portfolio was diversified, the reporting landscape was equally dispersed. Investment information was held across multiple entities and asset types, with differing documentation formats and varying levels of detail.

Management also had limited visibility over the fair value of its investments, particularly those involving equities, hedge funds and bonds. This made it challenging to monitor performance consistently or understand the group’s overall investment position at a point in time.

Without a consolidated and structured view of investment cost, fair value, and gains or losses, there was a risk of inconsistent monitoring, inefficient reporting and decision-making based on incomplete or delayed information. The company therefore required a centralised solution that could aggregate investment data across its entities and translate it into a management-ready overview.

The Solution

Stage 1: Consolidation Design & Data Structuring

To establish a consistent foundation for reporting, we:

  • Reviewed the company’s investment structure across the 16 entities and the range of asset classes held
  • Designed a standardised data structure to ensure investments could be captured consistently regardless of entity or instrument type
  • Defined the key data points needed for management reporting, including cost, fair value, and gain/loss positions

This established a common reporting framework to support both consolidated reporting and meaningful portfolio-level analysis.

Stage 2: Database Build Using a Fund Accounting Approach

Using our fund accounting system, we created a new database to consolidate investments across the group:

  • Captured each investment’s cost, fair value, and gain/loss position to enable consistent monitoring over time
  • Consolidated investments held across different entities into a unified framework, reducing fragmentation and improving comparability
  • Applied a fund-style structure to provide a single portfolio view, even though the underlying investments were held across multiple entities

This created a practical “single source of truth” for investment information that management could use for ongoing monitoring and analysis.

Stage 3: Reporting Enablement & Monitoring Support

To turn the consolidated data into meaningful management insights, we:

  • Produced a consolidated investment position overview, providing clearer visibility of overall portfolio value
  • Enabled ongoing monitoring of fair value movements and performance across key asset classes
  • Established a reporting-ready foundation to support ongoing management analysis and decision-making

The Results

With the consolidated investment database and management overview in place, the company achieved:

  • A clearer understanding of the overall net asset value (NAV) of its investments across all 16 entities
  • Improved visibility over fair value positions, especially for equities, hedge funds, and bonds
  • A consolidated, consistent view of investment performance through cost and gain/loss tracking
  • Better management decision-making supported by timely, structured portfolio insights

By implementing a fund-style consolidation approach, we helped management move from fragmented investment information to a unified investment position, supporting stronger oversight and more informed investment decisions.

How can companies consolidate investments held across multiple entities?

Companies can establish a centralised investment database that captures key information such as investment cost, fair value, gains and losses across each entity. Portfolio consolidation brings these individual positions together into a consistent reporting framework, making it easier for management to review the overall investment position.

How is fair value information used in investment portfolio reporting?

Fair value reporting provides an indication of what investments are worth at a given reporting date. Tracking fair value alongside investment cost and gains or losses allows management to monitor changes in portfolio value and assess investment performance over time.

Why is NAV important for an investment portfolio?

Net asset value (NAV) provides an indication of the value of assets after taking relevant liabilities into account. For investment portfolios, NAV reporting can help management understand the overall value of investments and monitor changes between reporting periods.

Can fund accounting systems be used for investments held by operating companies?

Yes. A fund accounting system can be used to structure and consolidate investment information even where investments are held across multiple entities. The appropriate approach depends on the company's investment structure, reporting requirements and the type of information management needs to monitor.

How can AccountServe support investment holding activities?

AccountServe can support investment holding activities through portfolio consolidation, fund accounting, NAV reporting, fair value monitoring and management reporting. These services can help businesses organise investment information across entities and provide management with a more consistent view of their overall portfolio.
